Meerschaum
History:
Meerschaum was found in the
17th century by an Austrian jeolog in a small area near
Eskisehir. It is called as "meerschaum" in
German language. Because at the first look it seams
as it is sea foam. The natives also call the meerschaum
as "curly stone" because while it is being
carved, the waste pieces seporate in the form of curly
hair.
Structure:
Meerschaum is a mineral that
contains %60 water, %30 magnesium, and %10 silicat and
also it is light, white and a porous clay stone.
Carving:
Meerschaum is generally used
in pipe production and also it is used in decorative
and ornamental (box, cigarette holders, fimbles, animal
figures, etc.) productions for collectors. Because of
the fact that the miners left their jobs to work in
better economical opportunities and the lock of miners
cause difficulties in finding the meerschaum. Moreower
it is necessary for the master carveing meerschaum to
have a long education on anatomy and the history of
art. Because of this reasons meerschaum pipe has became
more valuable invesment day by day.
